DEBRIS ON NJ TURNPIKE MIGHT HAVE CAUSED DEADLY TANKER TRUCK CRASH (New Jersey)

October 8, 2015 Kearny New Jersey USA

Mattresses and box springs flying from the roof of a van appeared to play a role in the death of a tanker truck driver in a fiery crash Wednesday on the New Jersey Turnpike, authorities said Thursday.

State Police said the driver was believed to have been a Newark resident, but declined to release an identification pending confirmation from the medical examiner.

The truck, operated by JSK Transport of Warren, N.J., was carrying 8,500 gallons of gasoline from a refinery in Linden, police said

According to a State Police update on the agency's Facebook page, the accident appeared to have been caused by two mattresses and two box springs that flew off the top of a van that was carrying them, causing other traffic to slow down and swerve to avoid them.

SETTLEMENT REACHED OVER QUEBEC OIL TRAIN DERAILMENT (USA & Canada)

Train crash in Lac Megantic
Train crash in Lac Megantic

A settlement has been reached for victims of an oil train derailment in Canada that killed 47 people.

The C$445 million (£221 million) fund was held up by Canadian Pacific, one of the companies involved in the incident.

On Friday, the settlement was approved by a judge in the US, where the deal is linked to the bankruptcy filing of another plaintiff. In 2013, a train carrying 72 oil tankers derailed causing an explosion in downtown Lac Megantic, Quebec.

The settlement ends a lawsuit brought by the victims against two railways - Montreal Maine & Atlantic Railways (MMA) and Canadian Pacific - as well as insurance companies and a dozen other firms.

Canadian Pacific argued that they should not be included in the suit because the derailment involved MMA trains and happened on MMA-owned tracks. However, the trains originated on Canadian Pacific tracks.

A judge in Quebec had ruled that Canadian Pacific failed to properly classify the highly volatile petrol being carried by the train at the beginning of its journey.

The crash caused an explosion and several fires which levelled the city's downtown, destroying 30 buildings.

TANKER TRUCK SPILLS RACING FUEL ONTO INTERSTATE 95 IN DELAWARE, BLOCKS LANES FOR HOURS (Philadelphia)

October 1, 2015 South Delaware Philadelphia USA

Racing fuel leaked onto Interstate 95 after a multi-vehicle crash south of Stanton, Delaware Wednesday morning.

The wreck in the southbound lanes near Exit 4B (Churchman Crossing Exit) around 8:10 a.m. left the tanker leaking fuel, said Delaware State Police.

Two people suffered minor injuries, said police. Police urged motorist to avoid the area since only the left passing lane could get by the crash scene. Police did eventually open a second lane.

RUNAWAY OIL TANKER TIPS, SPILLS 100 GALLONS IN YONKERS (New York State)

Runaway tanker in Yonkers NY

October 5, 2015 Yonkers New York State USA

A runaway oil tanker crashed into the side of an apartment building, tipped on its side and spilled 100 gallons of oil, a fire official said.

Yonkers Fire Department Deputy Chief Kevin Ford said the driver suffered minor injuries in the mishap on North Broadway and High Street Monday.

The truck's brakes gave way while it was stopped to make a delivery, Ford said. The driver wasn't in it at the time.

Ford said the 4,000-gallon tanker descended a hill, hit a car and struck the building; the vehicle then tilted onto its side. The building wasn't structurally damaged and people inside did not have to be relocated, Ford said.

A hazmat team stopped the leak. The tanker company is sending workers to right the tanker and tow it away, the deputy chief said.
